TKGV Minutes – Sept 2010

Meeting called to Order by: Trink Dahl-Prince acting for Pam St. Clair who is absent due to travel.
Time: 7:15

President's Comments: Our President is traveling and visiting in Colorado. Everyone was welcomed. We have 2 Guests today. Pam Clements who came to us through the Craft show, Mina Haynes is visiting with her grandmother Norma Haynes. September Birthdays were recognized.

What did the President do this month? Lots of knitting. Lots of travelling. PAM asked to say a special shout out to Sonia and Melanie for last month's presentation on St Mary's.

Minutes of the August meeting were posted to the TKGV blog and accepted as presented.

Treasurer's Report – taken from the August Newsletter
    * General Fund: $3,024.64
    * Charity Fund: $151.83
    * Grand Total: $3176.47
Treasurer's Report was accepted as presented.

Treasurer: Will get everyone on the same month for dues so for new members who just paid, we will pro-rate the dues so that next year, everyone will be on the same annual schedule.

Committee Reports:

Programs: Trink Dahl-Prince
  • September - Yarn Sale Deux and Book Swap – Tonight we are back with more from the stash!! There is also a book swap – anyone who brought a book can choose a different book at the book swap.
  • October – Birthday cake; Election of Officers and a program on Natural Yarn Dyeing
  • November – Annual Dues are due; Installation of Officers and Lora Marin will share knitted items from her closet!!!
  • December - Holiday Party

Charity Projects: Jackie Scott.
  • Please put any items to log on the back of the attendance sheet and Jackie will make sure Debbie Henderson gets the activities.

Welfare and Calling Tree: Karen Richardson
  • Jean Mills is back tonight.
  • Joanne Fischer has had some hospital procedures and is healing. We wish her well.

Community Events: Linda Johnson not present... however:
  • Shendoah Valley Fiber Festival, the last weekend in September
  • Fall Fiber Festival, Oct 2-3, Montpelier VA
  • The Vermont Sheep and Goat Association, October 2-3
  • Eastern Shore (Delmarva) Yarn Crawl

  • Stitches East, Hartford, CT – Oct 28-31

Newsletter and Publicity: Sonia Barisic.
  • Newsletter is online. Another BEAUTIFUL Newsletter!! Thank you Sonia. On the website, there is also a link to the newsletter archive.
  • Please get the items to Sonia by the 15th of the month so the newsletter can get out earlier.

Ways and Means: Angie Harris, Eleanor Cavin and Cheryl Cauthen-Bond.
  • The yarn for the raffle came from the Knitting Corner this month.

New Membership Committee: Angie Harris.
  • Not present, no update.

Historical Knitting: Karen Richardson.
  • Thank you Karen for another great Historical Knitting section.
  • Anyone with ideas for the Historical Knitting section of the newsletter or just some knitting history they would like researched, please call Karen and let her know. Karen enjoys doing the research and writing the articles.

Old Business:
  • Lots of discussion about a meeting place. Whether to continue to meet at the current location or go back to Westminster Canturbury. Kathy, Lora, Trink made suggestions and will follow up next month. Maureen suggested using Survey Monkey to get ideas on where to hold the meeting. Maureen accepted the idea of using Survey Monkey and working with Kathy Brown. In the current location, we pay $75 per month plus $325 liability per year
  • A motion was made and passed to give the knitting needles from Westminster Canturbury to Maura Ganther for the Knitting program at the Old Donation Center for gifted children in Virginia Beach. Maura is the teacher who runs the knitting program.
  • Election Slate:
    • President – Allison Hunt
    • VP – Trink Dahl-Prince
    • Secretary – Katie Gerwin (backed up by Lora Marin)
    • Treasurer – Kathy Brown
New Business:
  • Jackie – going to be Christmas before we know it. Do we want to do the Hat contest again? $25 gift certificate for 4 categories. Hats have traditionally gone to Caps for Kids in Norfolk. Four Categories are: Technical Merit, Originality, Best in Show and Most Submissions
  • Motion was made and seconded to repeat the Holiday hats program with the guild providing the 4 prizes of $25 each at the December meeting. Motion carried.
  • Discussion about what to do with the Historical “stash” of paperwork going back to the beginning of the Tidewater Knitting Guild. Discussion about whether the materials can be thrown out or have to be stored and if they have to be stored, should the Guild get a small Storage Bin? Also, what do we want to keep among the memorabilia – scrapbooks, pictures, etc.
    • Wanda will contact the National Guild to find out any legal or other requirements.
    • Kathy Brown will contact the City of VB Archives to find out if there is any interest.
    • Smithsonian may be interested in member ship lists and pictures of memebers of the Guild.
    • Next month we'll review the options and come up with recommendations.

Raffle: Lucky raffle winners picked from a variety of yarns from The Knitting Corner.

Show and Tell: Members showed many knitted garments and works in progress.

October Program: Dyeing yarns with Natural Substances
