May 6, 2013 Meeting Minutes

The president opened the May 2013 meeting at 7:15 p.m. and extended birthday greetings for TKGV members celebrating May birthdays.  The president welcomed our guests.

The April 2013 meeting minutes were approved.

The treasurer reported the guild’s balance as of this meeting is $4,485.00. 

The charity chair advised she had yarn from the Navy/Marine Relief Society for baby items.  In addition, she reported this year, to date, 17 members have completed knitting items for 12 charities. 

The June program will be a round robin of how to apply fringe and other embellishments to knitted items.


Yarn Shop News:

Baa Baa Sheep:  will have 2 trunk shows in May, one from C2Knits and one from Plymouth Yarns.  On 5/18, Cheryl Moore will teach a workshop on how to fix knitting mistakes.  On 6/15, Nell Knits will offer one or knitting workshops.  

The Knitting Corner:  will offer a 4 session workshop on creative thinking on Thursday nights. 

The Yarn Club:  has 2 trunk shows now, one from Scrumptious Yarns and one from “November Knits”.  On 6/15, The Yarn Club will host a Knit in Public event at the Virginia Beach Town Center. 

The president advised we will have a Knit in Public event on 6/29 at the Tides baseball game.  The tickets are $11.00/person, and family members are welcome.  Please bring your ticket money to the June meeting. 

The secretary announced the particulars of the 6/1 TKGV KIP LYS Scavenger Hunt.  We will meet at 9:15 a.m. at the Panera CafĂ© at Virginia Beach Blvd. and Columbus Circle for breakfast and to kick off the event.  Guild members will visit our 4 local yarn shops to Knit in Public at the shops and answer scavenger hunt questions.  Members may start the event at one of the 4 local shops instead of at the breakfast.  We will collect the scavenger hunt answers and the Knit in Public confirmations at the June meeting to determine who earned the most points.  The 3 guild members who earned the highest number of points will win prizes. 

The June program was a true walk in the closets of mother and daughter guild members and knitters, Cindy and Denise.  The guild enjoyed the informative display of knitted garments both had completed, along with the patterns and yarn information. 

The Ways and Means committee conducted the raffle of various donated items.

Following a review of the Fiber Kentucky Derby Hats, a winner, Sue Von Ohlsen was declared for wearing the hat that best represented fiber arts and the Kentucky Derby theme. 

The guild enjoyed the show and tell.

April 2013 TKGV meeting minutes

The president opened the April 2013 meeting at 7:15 p.m. with the introduction of the canvas TGKV Knitting Retreat bag and the sock yarn dyed in the TKGV selected color way for the retreat. Both items are available for purchase. 

The president extended birthday greetings for TKGV members celebrating April birthdays.  The president welcomed our guests and new member.  The president advised the guild received a nice thank you letter from the Department of Veteran’s Affairs for a member’s donation of knitted socks to the Veteran’s Hospital

The March 2013 meeting minutes, as corrected, were approved.

The treasurer reported the guild’s balance as of this meeting is $4,653.18. 

The vice president advised the guild is seeking nominations for the 2014 TKGV board positions of president, vice president and secretary. 

Sue Von Ohlsen advised she will assist guild members with coaching and answer questions for any knitting projects members wish to enter into the 2013 TKGV Knitting Contest.  Members may contact Sue at her shop, The Knitting Corner.

The newsletter chair thanked everyone for contributing articles.  The newsletter chair needs to receive articles by the 15th of the month,

The programs chair advised we will hold a Kentucky Derby Hat contest at the May meeting.  Members may wear a hat that celebrates the Kentucky Derby and is fiber related.  The hat may be an original production containing fiber or may be a purchased hat that is embellished with fiber. 

Yarn Shop News:

Baa Baa Sheep:  has new yarns available for spring and summer projects.  

The Knitting Corner:  has new yarns available for spring and summer projects.  In addition, the shop has a made in USA yarn tree designed to hold a ball of yarn while you knit from the outside of the ball.

The Yarn Club:  has a “Coastal Knits” trunk show now.  Also, the shop will host knitwear designer, Laura Aylor, the last weekend in April.

The president advised the Gathering of the Guilds will take place on Saturday, 4/6.  Again, the guild will have a table and needs members to support the table during this event. 

The president is participating in the Fine Arts Fair at Western Branch Elementary School on Friday, 4/6.  If any guild members wish to participate, please contact the president. 

Linda Johnson, the author of the Wallis Knits pattern:  “Weekend at the Henderson’s: Sandy”, led the program.  The guild will participate in a knit a long of this versatile shawl pattern.  Linda demonstrated several finished shawls using different types of yarn and subtle stitch variations.  And, Linda reviewed the pattern details.  

The Ways and Means committee conducted the raffle of various donated items.

The guild enjoyed the show and tell.

March 4, 2013 TKGV Proposed Meeting Minutes

The president opened the March 2013 meeting at 7:15 p.m. with birthday greetings for TKGV members celebrating March birthdays.  The president welcomed our guests and new member.

The February 2013 meeting minutes were approved.

The treasurer reported the guild’s balance prior to this meeting is $5356.60.  The treasurer advised we have not paid the majority of the pending retreat expenses yet. 

The vice president updated the guild on the 2013 TKGV knitting contest.  The contest rules are posted in the March newsletter.  Entries are due by September 7, 2013.  All items entered must be knit between September 2012 and September 2013.  The winners will be announced at the October 2013 meeting. 

The newsletter chair thanked Lynn Clements for her contributions to the newsletter.  The newsletter chair encouraged all guild members to submit articles for the newsletter.

The charity chair advised yarn is available for charity knitting and thanked the recent charity knit in attendees for participating in this event.  The guild will focus on items for St. Mary’s Home.  St. Mary’s needs lap blankets, mittens, hats and slippers for residents ranging from infancy to age 21.  All items must be machine washable in hot water.  Guild members were reminded to report their charity knitting items, whether for St. Mary’s or other charities on the charity items list.

The president advised the Spring Craft Fair is Friday through Sunday, 3/15 to 3/17.  The guild will have a booth and needs members to support the booth during the fair.  All members who support the booth will receive free entrance to the Spring Craft Fair provided they sign up prior to 3/8/13. 

The president advised the Gathering of the Guilds will take place on Saturday, 4/6.  Again, the guild will have a table and needs members to support the table during this event.

The president solicits volunteers to plan the guild’s World Wide Knit in Public event(s) for 2013.  We need a team to plan the location(s) and dates for this June event. 

Yarn Shop News:

Baa Baa Sheep:  will be participating in the TKGV Knitting by the Sea retreat this weekend.

The Knitting Corner:  is the sole yarn shop for Kelbie hand dyed yarns.  Kelbie is a Virginia based independent yarn dyer.  

The Yarn Club: is offering 15% off 2 skeins of yarn for guild members attending the TKGV Knitting by the Sea retreat this weekend.   

Marilyn Estrada, a certified yoga instructor, led the guild in an interactive program of hand care for knitters.  Marilyn led the guild through a series of hand massage techniques, hand stretches and provided tips on good hand care for knitters and crafters.    

The Ways and Means committee conducted the raffle of sock themed yarn.   

The guild enjoyed the show and tell. 

The April program is an introduction to a guild knit-a-long shawl project led by Linda Johnson.  Members do not need to bring yarn, needles or other materials to the April meeting to participate in this program.

February 2013 Meeting Minutes

The president opened the February 2013 meeting at 7:15 p.m. with a reminder to wear red in February to support education for women’s heart disease.  The welcome committee chair welcomed and introduced our guests.  The president extended the guild’s happy birthday wishes to members celebrating their birthday in February.

The January 2013meeting minutes were approved.

The treasurer reported the guild’s balance prior to this meeting is $4,837.92. 

The president advised the board approved the 2013 guild’s budget, and the 2013 TKGV budget is the same as the 2012 TKGV budget.

The charity chair advised yarn is available for charity knitting.  The guild will hold a charity knit in on Saturday, 2/23 at the president’s home.  The knit-in will take place from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.  Please contact the president to r.s.v.p. for this event.

The president advised the Spring Craft Fair is Friday through Sunday, 3/15 to 3/17.  The guild will have a booth and needs members to support the booth during the fair.  All members who support the booth will receive free entrance to the Spring Craft Fair provided they sign up prior to 2/28/13.  Members may sell their products at the fair if they sign up with the president by 2/28/13.

The president advised the board and program chair seek member input for 2 programs for 2013.  The board has programs for the remaining months in 2013. 

The welfare chair provided updates on two losses suffered recently.

Yarn Shop News:

Baa Baa Sheep:  is expanding the number of yarns it carries and will carry Americo yarn and will be the only U.S. distributor of this Canadian yarn.  The shop is receiving spring and summer yarns now.

The Knitting Corner:  is holding a clearance sale for fall and winter yarns.  The shop is receiving spring and summer yarns and is holding classes, to include a summer shawl class.

The Yarn Club: continues to receive Madelintosh yarns, as well as spring and summer yarns.  The shop has classes posted on its’ web site.

The newsletter chairperson thanked those members who are submitting articles and requests members to continue submitting articles on topics of interest to knitters.

The TKGV Knitting Retreat team continues to receive registrations for the March 2013 retreat.  
Four vendors will participate in the retreat.  We saw the nice goody bag attendees will
receive.  The remaining goody bags, just perfect for yarn shopping, will be available for
sale after the retreat.

Sue Von Ohlsen presented the program on wet felting with roving.  She conducted a live demonstration and brought a sample of wet felting.  

The Ways and Means committee conducted the raffle of red yarns.

The guild enjoyed the show and tell. 

The March program is Hand Care for Knitters.  Members are encouraged to wear comfortable clothes for this program.

January 7, 2013 Meeting Minutes

The president opened the January 2013 meeting at 7:23 p.m. by welcoming and introducing our visitors.  The president extended the guild’s happy birthday wishes to members celebrating their birthday in January.

The November 2012 and December 2012 meeting minutes were approved.

The president gave the treasurer’s report, advising the guild has $4,458.00.  The board will post the 2013 budget in the next newsletter.

The charity chairperson announced the 3 winners of the charity knitting contest. Each winner will receive a check as a prize.  The knitter with the greatest number of knitted items donated to charity for 2012 is Denise Call, with Margaret Faust, second, and Wanda Gunnoe, third.

Carrollyn Cox extended a warm thank you to the guild members who knitted scarves for the Eastern Shore Chapel’s Homeless Shelter event.  Mrs. Cox advised the scarf recipients were truly touched by the gifts of handmade scarves. 

The guild will hold a charity knit-in on Saturday, February 23, from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the president’s home.  Participants may contact the president to confirm participation.

The guild will attend the January 26 Admiral’s hockey game.  For guild members who want to participate, please contact the president prior to the game to arrange for tickets in the same section of the venue.

The Knitting Corner:  has received new Ella Rae yarns and has posted the current classes on Ravelry.

The Yarn Club: has several trunk shows and will offer a Super Bowl Sunday yarn sale.

The TKGV Knitting Retreat team continues to receive registrations for the March 2013 retreat.  The color way contest is underway.  Please see the TKGV Ravelry group for further information.  

The president asked the members to write down their 2013 knitting resolutions.  We will review our 2013 knitting resolutions at the December 2013 meeting.

The Ways and Means committee conducted the raffle of items donated by Baa Baa Sheep and Thirty One.

The guild enjoyed the show and tell. 

The members enjoyed the stash sale.  

The February program will focus on women’s heart health.  Members are encouraged to wear red to the February meeting.
