July 2, 2012 Meeting Minutes


The president opened the July 2012 meeting at 7:12 p.m. by welcoming the guest and a charter member.  

The minutes of the June 2012 meeting were approved.

The treasurer gave the treasurer’s report advising the guild’s bank balance is $2967.15. 

The president advised she will discuss proposed changes to the TKGV by-laws at the August meeting.  We will vote on the proposed changes to the by-laws at the September meeting.

The president solicited volunteers to run for 2013 TKGV Board positions.  Please contact the president or vice president if you are interested in running for a 2013 TKGV Board position.  

The president advised the guild seeks volunteers to write articles about other members or to volunteer to have an article written about them in the guild’s newsletter.  In addition, the guild seeks articles about book reviews, new knitting techniques and the like for the newsletter. 

The president advised we are offering a super raffle item at the July, August, September and October meetings.  The item is a large basket of high quality yarns from Joanne Fischer’s stash.  The proceeds from the raffle will go to the education expenses for the March 2013 knitting retreat.

The president advised we will hold a knitting retreat March 7 – March 10, 2013 at the Hampton Inn, Corolla, NC.  A committee will meet on July 20, 2012 to organize the retreat.  If you are interested in working on the retreat organization committee, please contact the president.  

The president advised the guild will hold another judged knitting contest in May 2013.  The same rules as 2012 will apply with the additional category of original work and the requirement of the submissions being completed since the May 2012.  

The vice president and other guild members assisted members with answers to “Ask the Experts” knitting questions.

The August program will be the led by Sue Von Ohlsen on how to “kill” acrylic yarn, i.e. how to block acrylic yarn projects.   

After the guild enjoyed the show and share time, the guild enjoyed the Ways and Means Committee’s raffle of yarns based on a red, white and blue theme.

June 2012 TKGV Meeting Minutes


The president opened the June 2012 meeting at 7:15 p.m. by welcoming the guests and the 2 new members.  The president extended birthday wishes to our members celebrating June birthdays. 

The minutes of the May 2012 meeting were approved as amended.

The treasurer gave the treasurer’s report advising the guild’s bank balance is $3081.25. 

The vice president advised we have a confirmed date of 11/3/12 for a weekend of knitting technique classes led by Nancy of Nancy’s Knit Knacks. 

The charity chair advised 96 items have been submitted for charity by 10 members.  The chair advised the American Red Cross seeks caps and scarves in dark colors for veterans.  The American Red Cross distributes the donated items to veterans at the VA hospitals.  Kathy Nelson, Director of the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society gave her thank you to the guild for the donated knitted items the Society distributes to new parents during new parent classes.

The president confirmed we will sponsor two opportunities to participate in the World Wide Knit in Public event this year.  The guild will meet on Sunday, June 10 at 12:00 p.m. at the Nordstroms Cafe at MacArthur Mall for a WWKIP session.  The guild will meet again on June 15 at the Tide’s baseball stadium to watch a baseball game and knit in public.  The cost for the baseball tickets is $11.00 per ticket.  Guild members and family members are welcome.

Sue Von Ohlsen presented the program with a review of the TKGV knitting contest results.  She advised the contest items were of superior quality and judging required close attention to details.  The president advised after a review of comments on the knitting contest, a TKGV knitting contest will take place in May, 2013, allowing contestants plenty of time to prepare contest entries.  

The guild enjoyed the Ways and Means Committee raffle yarns based on a summer knitting theme.  

The president advised the guild will sponsor a knitting retreat at the Outer Banks the weekend of March 8 to March 10, 2013.  The guild has secured room rates of $68.00/night at the Hampton Inn in Corolla.  The president seeks volunteers to help set up the weekend event.  

The July program will be the annual summer yarn sale and an “Ask the Expert” session.

May 2012 Meeting Minutes

The president opened the May 2012 meeting at 7:10 p.m. by welcoming the guests and the new member.

The minutes of the April 2012 meeting were approved
The treasurer gave the treasurer’s report advising the guild’s bank balance is $2,970.00

The vice president advised we have a tentative date of 11/3/12 for a weekend of knitting technique classes led by Nancy of Nancy’s Knit Knacks.

The charity chair advised her, her mother and aunt attended the Navy Marine Corps Relief Society Volunteer Recognition luncheon. The Navy Marine Corps Relief Society requests blankets for newborn babies. The blankets should be 36” x 36” finished, without fringe and without large holes that could catch babies’ fingers. The Society requests we do not mix blue and pink in the same blanket. We can use other colors with pink or blue, but not mix blue and pink in the same blanket. Please bring any blankets to a meeting. The charity chair will get the blankets to the Society. In addition, the Virginia Beach SPCA seeks pet blankets. The Yarn Club is collecting knitted and crocheted squares from any type of yarn for the “Hugs from the Heart” blanket project to support the All Heart Home Health & Hospice charity. The only specification for the squares is that they are 8” x 8” finished.

Sue Von Olsen, owner, The Knitting Corner, advised the shop offers a 30% sale on all Ella Rae yarns in May, 2012. In addition, the shop is offering a number of classes. You can find the class schedule on the shop’s website.

Beverly Boler reported The Yarn Club has classes scheduled for late spring. You can find the class schedule on the shop’s website.

Kimberly Widick, Thirty-One consultant, gave a brief presentation regarding Thirty-One bags suited for knitters and crafters. Kimberly advertises in the guild newsletter. She will donate 5% of the sales from TKGV members to the guild. In 2012, she has donated $20.00 to date to the guild.

The president advised the guild will offer a knitting help clinic before every monthly meeting. The clinic will start at 6:30 p.m. before the monthly meeting.

The president reminded the guild the knitting contest entries are due by May 12. The president encourages all members to submit an entry to the contest. The contest winners will be announced at the June meeting. The June program will be led by the contest judges who will discuss the contest results, the judging process and what members can do to prepare contest entries.

Sue Von Olsen, Lora Marin and Linda Johnson each manned tables to provide a cast-on techniques clinic. Members were able to watch and practice three different and useful cast-on methods. Thank you to Sue, Lora and Linda for your great instruction!

The guild enjoyed reviewing the Kentucky Derby Knitting Hat contest entries. Linda Johnson won the Kentucky Derby Knitting Hat contest for her hat that contained all the yarn, needles and notions necessary to complete a knitted project.

The guild enjoyed the Ways and Means Committee raffle yarns based on a Mother’s Day theme, courtesy of KnitWits.

April 2, 2012 TKGV meeting minutes

The president opened the April 2012 meeting at 7:15 p.m. by introducing the current TKGV officers. Amy Upson welcomed the eight guests attending the meeting. The president extended birthday wishes to those members celebrating their birthday in April.

The minutes of the March 2012 meeting were approved pending correction.

The treasurer gave the treasurer’s report advising the guild’s bank balance is $2,535.25.

The Ways and Means Committee is holding a raffle for a sweater kit. Tickets may be purchased at the April through June guild meetings. The sweater kit will be awarded to the raffle winner at the June guild meeting.

The vice president advised the guild she has researched knitting instructors who are available to the guild within a short travel distance. She advised Nancy’s Knit Knack’s has availability in the near future to offer classes to our guild. Lora will post a list of class topics on the guild’s Ravelry and Facebook pages to measure class interest.

The president advised the guild will participate in the Gathering of the Guilds at the Frances Land House, Virginia Beach, on 4/7/12.

The president advised the guild’s World Wide Knit in Public Day will occur on 6/9 or 6/10/12. The WWKIP chair is researching alternative venues for this event.

Linda Johnson has been able to obtain two entries in the Virginian Pilot newspaper recently regarding TKGV activities.

Sue Von Olsen, owner, The Knitting Corner, advised the shop offers a 30% sale on Fiesta yarns for April, 2012.

The president advised the rules and entry information for the TKGV knitting contest are posted on the TKGV website. The president encourages everyone to enter the contest.

The president advised the May program will be a review of different cast-on methods. Please bring a J or H crochet hook, size 8 knitting needles and some worsted weight knitting yarn to practice the various cast on methods reviewed.

The president advised the books on the back table are from Joanne Fischer’s collection. The guild will take cash offers for the books. All cash raised will go to the guild’s education fund.

The guild enjoyed the Ways and Means Committee raffle of cotton yarns and the “The Knitter’s Book of Socks”.

Three guild members lead the guild in instruction on how to knit with beads. All three instructors received applause for their helpful instruction and demonstration of knitting with beads.

The guild enjoyed the show and share time.

The president extended a thank you to the members who participated in the Spring Crafts Festival.

Knitting Contest Rules

TKGV Knitting Contest Rules


1.     The contest is open to all.
2.     All items should be recently knitted (within the last couple years), clean, blocked and free of all odors.  All work must be the work of the participant.
3.     An article may be entered in one category only.  A maximum of one entry per category will be accepted from a participant.  There is a $2.00 fee per article entered.
4.     All entries must include an entry form, fee, and a 3x5 card with category and description of item to include the fiber used.  Entries will be submitted in a sealed box, bag or container and can be turned in at a guild meeting, The Knitting Corner, The Yarn Club, or Knitwits.
5.     The deadline for all entries is May 12, 5:00 pm.
6.     A panel of qualified judges will judge entries.  Judges have the right to move items to a better category or create sub categories if the number of entries warrants it.  Judges are not required to award all ribbons, if in their opinion the entries are not appropriate quality.  Judges’ decisions are final.
7.     Ribbons will be awarded for 1st through 4th place and a cash award of $15.00 for each 1st place finish in each category.  A Best in Show will also be selected and awarded a ribbon and a cash award of $25.00.
8.     All entries must be picked up at the June guild meeting or other arrangements made by a participant.
9.     Every effort will be made to safeguard and care for the entered items; however, TKGV and the above listed knit shops assume no responsibility for damages or loss.
