President-elect, Debbie Henderson, opened the January 2012 meeting at 7:18 p.m. On motion of Ray Struebing, seconded, the guild approved installing the 2012 TKGV board as elected at the December 2011 TKGV meeting.

The president, Debbie Henderson, welcomed our guests, extended birthday wishes to our members celebrating January birthdays and asked all members to wear their name tag. In addition, if a member does not wear their name tag to a meeting, the member will owe $.25 to the name tag basket.

On motion of Lora Morin, seconded, the guild approved the December 2011 minutes.

Lora Morin asked all guild members to join TKGV via Facebook as it is an efficient method of communication with guild members.

The president named the committee chairpersons for 2012:

Ways & Means: Denise Call and Marilyn Estrada

Charity: Chris Goudeau

Marketing: Kimberly Villereal

Program Coordinator: Sue Von Olsen.

The guild seeks a third volunteer for the Ways & Means Committee, a volunteer for the Welfare Committee and a volunteer for the Community Events Committee.

Chris Goudeau announced the following 3 winners for donating the most knitted charity items in 2011:
1. Wanda Gunnoe
2. Margaret Faust
3. Katie Gerwien.
Each of the above will receive a $25.00 from the guild for their charity knitting donations for 2011.

Debbie Henderson will host a charity knit-in on Saturday, February 11, 2012 from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. We will have a potluck lunch.

The February program, on the color wheel, will be conducted by Sue Von Olsen. Please bring a color wheel to the February program. Marilyn Estrada will conduct the March program on yoga for knitters and sitters.

The president announced the Spring Craft Fair will take place the weekend of the Shamrock Marathon. We do not have a date yet for the Frances Land House Gathering of Guilds, 2012. The Maryland Sheep and Wool Festival will take place the weekend of May 5, 2012. The Chesapeake Water Heritage Festival will take place October 13 – 14, 2012.

Sue Von Olsen announced The Knitting Corner is hosting the owner of Sestari Yarns (a Virginia farm) Tuesday, January 10, 1012 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. The owner will sign books and will have yarns available.

The Yarn Club will have the new Jean Frost book and samples and a fitting event January 14, 2012 at 1:00 p.m.

The guild will attend an Admiral’s hockey game on Saturday, 2/18/12. We will sit together. Family and friends are invited. Please bring money for the tickets ($14.00 per ticket) to the February meeting.

The January program was the annual member yarn sale.

The Ways & Means Committee conducted the raffle. The members enjoyed the show and share.

December 5, 2011 Guild Meeting Minutes

The TKGV president called the December 2011 meeting to order at 7:22 p.m. by welcoming our guests and extending birthday wishes to our members and guests celebrating their birthdays in December.

The secretary noted the guild experienced the first known marriage of 2 TKGV guild members: Kimberly Reynolds to Christopher Villareal on 11/11/11. The entire TKGV membership gives its congratulations and wishes for great happiness to Mr. and Mrs. Villareal.

The president introduced the slate of candidates for the 2012 TKGV board: Debbie Henderson, President; Lora Marin, Vice President; Katie Gerwien, Secretary. Bev Boler is nominated for Treasurer but was not present for the December meeting. By acclamation, the guild approved the above slate for the 2012 TKGV Board of Directors.

By acclamation, the minutes of the November, 2011 meeting were approved.

The president reported the Treasury had a balance of $2,533.00 in the general fund and $54.00 in the charity fund, as of the printing of the most recent newsletter.

The president advised TKGV is celebrating it 20^th anniversary. No charter members were present at this meeting. Ruth Coleman, Jackie Scott and Cheryl Cauthen-Bond were recognized for their long term membership and participation in TKGV. A thank you was extended to Trink Dahl-Prince for organizing the Sally Melville classes, as well as a thank you was extended to all past board members for their service to the guild.

The charity hat contest was held resulting in Wanda Gunnoe winning all 4 categories of the contest, again the first known winner of all 4 categories. Wanda won for best technical merit, most original, best in show and highest number of hats knitted. In all, 91 hats were donated to various charities as a result of this contest.

The guild enjoyed the Christmas Pollyanna gift exchange and show-and-tell of current projects.

After a brief discussion, the guild confirmed the January 2012 meeting will occur on Monday, January 2, 2012 at the regular time and location.

November 7, 2011 Meeting Minutes

The TKGV president called the November 2011 meeting to order at 7:15 p.m. by welcoming our guests and extending birthday wishes to our members and guests celebrating their birthdays in November.

Katie Gerwien presented the program regarding what she learned at The Knitting Guild of America’s convention.

By acclamation, the minutes of the September and October, 2011 meetings were approved.

We received the treasurer’s report. The general fund has a balance of $2675.92, and the charity fund has a balance of $534.60. The treasurer confirmed we have some outstanding bills. By acclamation, the guild approved purchasing a $480.00 knitting basket gift through Heifer International.

Debbie Henderson reminded the guild of the hat and slipper contest which will occur at the December 2011 meeting. Awards will be given for the Best in Show, Best Technical Merit, Most Unique and the highest number of contributions by one member. Debbie suggested members bring purchased hats if they don’t have time to knit hats. All of the hats and slippers generated for the contest will be donated to charity.

Trink Dahl-Prince presented the nominating committee’s slate of candidates for the 2012 board: Debbie Henderson, President; Lora Marin, Vice President; Bev Boler, Treasurer; and Katie Gerwien, Secretary. The guild will vote on the board positions at the December 2011 meeting.

The guild approved having a Pollyanna gift exchange at the December 2011 meeting. The Pollyanna gift exchange is voluntary with the gifts being limited to $15.00 in value and knitting related. In addition, the guild will provide light desserts at the December 2011 meeting.

The guild enjoyed the show and tell of current projects.

October 3, 2011 TKGV Meeting Minutes

The TKGV president called the September 2011 meeting to order at 7:20 p.m. by welcoming our guests and extending birthday wishes to our members and guests celebrating their birthdays in October. Members and guests enjoyed the opportunity to meet with 2 other attendees they had not met previously.

The president gave each attendee a copy of the by-laws and explained the by-laws require a nominating committee to select the 2012 TKGV board candidates. Trink Dahl-Prince, Melanie Perez-Lopez and Sonja Barisic will compromise the TKGV nominating committee for selecting the candidates for the 2012 TKGV board. The nominating committee will report at the November TKGV meeting.

On motion of Rae Struebing, seconded, TKGV members approved offering 2 scholarships to current TKGV members to attend each of the 4 TKGV sponsored Sally Melville classes.

Rae Struebing accepted a friendly amendment from Debbie Henderson to the above motion; the treasurer will review the requests for scholarships and will limit scholarships to no more than 2 classes per applicant, based on the total number of scholarship requests.

We received the treasurer’s report. The general fund has a balance of $3884.98, and the charity fund has a balance of $458.66, with both balances calculated prior to the October meeting.

Debbie Henderson advised the guild she will set up a table and display at the Water Ways Heritage Festival at the Great Bridge Battlefields the weekend of October 8 (from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.) and October 9, 2011 (from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.). Guild members are invited to participate in the event. Please bring a portable chair. We will focus on knitting for charity. Debbie will have patterns and yarns. Please bring 16” # 8, 9 & 10 needles to work on hats. In addition, Debbie will raffle gifts to those members who attend the event.

The guild celebrated the guild’s 19th anniversary.

Trink Dahl-Prince reviewed the Sally Melville classes and solicited assistance for transporting Sally during the weekend of her visit.

Following the member show and tell of current projects, the Ways and Means Committee conducted the raffle. The items in the raffle were from The Knitting Corner.

September 12, 2011 Guild Meeting Minutes

The TKGV president called the September 2011 meeting to order at 7:24 p.m. by welcoming our guests and extending birthday wishes to our members and guests celebrating their birthdays in September.

The president spoke about the variety of iTunes podcasts available re: knitting. She encouraged all of us to listen to the podcasts.

The guild approved the minutes of the August 2011 guild meeting.

Debbie Henderson advised the guild she will set up a table and display at the Water Ways Heritage Festival at the Great Bridge Battlefields the weekend of October 8 (from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.) and October 9, 2011 (from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.). Guild members are invited to participate in the event. Please bring a portable chair. We will focus on knitting for charity. Debbie will have patterns and yarns. Please bring 16” # 8, 9 & 10 needles to work on hats.

The president asked members who are not receiving the monthly newsletter via e-mail to send the president the members’ current names and e-mail addresses.

The treasurer will collect the annual guild dues of $20.00 at the October 2011 meeting. After a brief discussion on pro-rating the annual dues for new members who joined the guild in the most recent months prior to October, the president advised the guild will review the topic again at the October 2011 meeting to decide if dues should be pro-rated those members who join the guild in the most recent months prior to October.

The president advised the guild will elect new officers at the October 2011 meeting. At this point, the president’s, the vice-president’s and the secretary’s positions are open for volunteers. Please contact the president if you are interested in serving in one of these positions for the Nov. ’11 – Oc. ’12 term.

Trink Dahl-Prince led the program on Sally Melville’s patterns. We viewed various finished Sally Melville projects completed by guild members.

Following the member show and tell of current projects, the Ways and Means Committee conducted the raffle.

The president confirmed the October meeting will occur on October 3, 2011.

With no further business to conduct, the meeting was adjourned at 9:00 p.m.

August 1, 2011 Guild Meeting Minutes

The TKGV president called the August 2011 meeting to order at 7:25 p.m. by welcoming our guests and extending birthday wishes to our members and guests celebrating their birthdays in August.

Wanda Gunoe led the program on knitting on the bias.

The TKGV president advised the July meeting did not have quorum, and as such, no business was conducted and no minutes were scribed.

The guild approved the June 2011 minutes as published.

The TKGV treasurer gave the treasurer’s report.

Debbie Henderson gave an update on charity knitting. Currently the guild is seeking knitted items for Hats for the Homeless, baby booties for local infant needs and pet blankets.

Debbie Henderson advised the guild she will set up a table and display at the Water Ways Heritage Festival at the Great Bridge Battlefields the weekend of October 8(from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m .) and October 9, 2011 (from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.). Guild members are invited to participate in the event. Please bring a portable chair.

The Knitting Corner advised they are raffling a blanket and the “big ball of yarn” with the proceeds from both raffles going to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer foundation.

The Ways and Means Committee conducted the monthly raffle. The raffle included items donated from The Knitting Corner and The Yarn Club.

After discussion, the guild did not want to entertain a motion to provide beverage catering at the monthly meetings.

The TKGV president reviewed the upcoming Fall Fiber Festivals.

For shop news, The Knitting Corner displayed a new yarn designed for hand crocheting scarves and a new yarn line from Fiesta Yarn Company, “Color Cruise” which offers specific color ways on a monthly basis. The Yarn Club advised the shop has received the entire line of Madelintosh yarns, the Boulder yarn to be knitted on size 35 needles and an array of yarns for the fall season.

On the motion of Lora Morin, the TKGV approved holding a hats and slippers contest for the December 2011 meeting. Members can bring in hats and slippers to be donated to charity (will require machine washable yarn) to the December 2011 meeting. Four members will be selected as winners in the following categories:
1. Greatest number of donated items
2. Best technical merit
3. Most original design
4. Best overall item.
The 4 winners will receive a $25.00 gift certificate each for a total of $100.00 in prizes.

The guild enjoyed the member show and tell.

The TKGV president reminded the guild the September 2011 meeting will take place on Monday, September 12, 2011. We will not meet on Labor Day.

The TKGV president called the June 2011 meeting to order at 7:25 p.m. by welcoming our guests and extending birthday wishes to our members and guests celebrating their birthdays in June.

Sue Von Ohlsen presented a program on knitting with beads, with a specific emphasis on antique knitted bead bags. Sue’s presentation was quite interesting and contained beautiful and inspiring projects. Sue’s beaded knitting has been published and has been displayed at the Smithsonian Museum.

The guild approved Beverly Boler’s gracious offer to serve as treasurer for the rest of the term.

The president gave an update on the Sally Melville classes, to include registration forms.

On motion of Wanda Gunnoe, the guild approved using $322.27 to obtain bags for the World Wide Knit in Public Day.
The World Wide Knit in Public Day event will take place on Sunday, 06/19/11 from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the D’Art Center in Norfolk, Virginia. Please bring a portable chair, knitting and a snack (if needed).

After the member show and tell, the Ways and Means committee conducted a raffle with items from KnitWits Virginia Beach, Virginia.

May 2011 TKGV meeting minutes

The TKGV president called the May 2011 meeting to order at 7:15 p.m. by welcoming our guests and conducting a scavenger hunt for items found in our knitting bags.

Trink Dahl-Prince, Kathy Brown, Margaret Faust and Debbie Henderson presented a program on charity knitting, by providing the guild with information regarding a variety of organizations that seek knitted items for charity.

The minutes from the April 2011 meetings were approved.

The treasurer’s report was received.

The president gave an update on the Sally Melville classes. Registration will start at the June, 2011 meeting.

We were advised the TKGV Knit in Public Day will take place on June 19, 2011 at the D’Art Center in Norfolk, Virginia from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Cheryl Bond seeks volunteers to assist with set up and tear down and to man a guild table.

After the member show and tell, the Ways and Means committee conducted a raffle with items from The Knitting Corner in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

April 4, 2011 TGKV meeting minutes

The TKGV vice- president called the April 2011 meeting to order at 7:15 p.m. by welcoming our guests and giving birthday wishes to our members who celebrate their birthday in April. Several members commented the meeting time in Facebook may be incorrect. Our Facebook liaison will correct the meeting time.

Norma Haynes, Sue Von Ohlsen and Maureen Cahill presented an inspiring program on the Masters Knitting class series available through the Knitting Guild of America. For further information on the class series, access the Knitting Guild of America’s website or Cast On magazine.

The minutes from the March, 2011 meetings were approved.

The treasurer’s report was received.

The president welcomed and introduced three new members to the guild.

Debbie Henderson advised the various agencies are no longer taking winter hats until next winter. Debbie advised there is a need for baby hats and baby layette items.

We were advised the TKGV Knit in Public Day will take place either June 12, 2011 or June 19, 2011 at the D’Art Center in Norfolk, Virginia. We await final word from the D’Art Center on which date is available.

The Cornerstone Alpaca Farm in Windsor, Virginia is shearing the alpacas on 04/08/11 and the Gathering of the Guilds will take place on April 9, 2011 at the Frances Land House.

Kim Reynolds, Social Media Director, for XRX, which owns Knitters Magazine and the Stitches Expo series advised of the Stitches South Expo taking place 04/14 – 04/16/11 in Atlanta, Ga.

We were advised the Sally Melville classes will be Emergency Measures and Borders & Buttonholes. We may schedule 2 1.5 hours classes in addition. We will receive further information on the classes.

The president solicited a list of names of possible teachers to contract for 2012.

Sonja Barisic requested volunteers for submitting articles for the newsletter and for participating as the subject of “getting to know you” articles. Please contact Sonja if you have articles or will participate in the getting to know you series.

Following the knitting show and tell, the Ways and Means committee raffled items from Knitting Addiction in Nags Head, N.C. and from The Knitting Corner in Virginia Beach, VA.

March 7, 2011 TKGV meeting minutes

The TKGV president called the March 2011 meeting to order at 7:15 p.m. by welcoming our guests and extending birthday wishes to our members who celebrate their birthday in March.

Katie Gerwien presented a knit-along program introducing entrelac knitting.

The minutes from the January and February 2011 meetings were approved.

The treasurer was not present, thus the treasurer’s report was not received.

The president welcomed and introduced three new members to the guild.

Debbie Henderson gave an update on the 2011 guild charity knit-in. Nine guild members participated and produced 23 hats for charity.

The guild voted on the proposed name for the guild’s newsletter, with “Purls of Wisdom” selected.

Trink Dahl-Prince advised the April 2011 program will feature 3 master knitters who will discuss the Knitting Guild of America’s master knitting program.

The president advised we did not participate in the Virginia Beach Spring Craft Fair this year as the paperwork arrived too late to organize the event.

The president advised the Gathering of the Guilds will take place on April 9, 2011 at the Frances Land House.

The Ways and Means Committee raffled items from The Yarn Club.

February 2011 TKGV minutes

On February 7, 2011, the TKGV president called the February 2011 meeting to order at 7:25 p.m. by welcoming the guild back to Westminster- Canterbury and welcoming our guests.

The president asked for updates from the local yarn shops. Andrea Riddle advised she is opening “The Yarn Club”, a new knitting shop, in early March 2011. The address is 240 Mustang Trail, Suite 8, Virginia Beach, Virginia. Andrea will provide more information regarding hours, products, etc. as she continues to prepare for the shop opening.

The president advised the board agreed to move the program to the opening of meetings to allow sufficient time for our programs and to conclude meetings with the business portion.

Andrea Riddle and Lora Morin presented a very helpful program and demonstration of how to repair mistakes in ribbing and cable knitting.

Debbie Henderson reminded the guild of the Charity Knit-In on February 26, 2011 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Please bring a dish for the pot luck lunch and advise Debbie if you are attending. Debbie advised the guild continues to knit hats for the homeless, preemie hats for Caps for Good and any clothing items for St. Mary’s Infants Home. The guild also knits blankets for animals in animal shelters.

The treasurer’s report was received.

The president requested all members please send an email vote to Sonja re: their preference on two proposed names for the TKGV newsletter, “The Loop” or “Purls of Wisdom.”

The president collected class interest forms for the October 22 & 23 Sally Melville classes. The president advised she will contact Sally Melville with the class interest results and develop a program for October 22 and 23. Further information to follow.

The president encouraged members to join the national guild, The Knitting Guild of America, for several reasons, to the include receipt of the well written and educational magazine, “Cast On” and for admittance to national guild events, including the event that will take place in September, 2011 in Greensboro, N.C.

Cheryl Cauthen-Bond gave a report on her trip to the first Vogue Knitting Live convention held in New York City, NY. Cheryl advised there were over 2500 knitters in attendance from all over the world, over 200 classes offered, design contests, a market and a cocktail party with the teachers.

The guild enjoyed the members’ show-n-tell and the Ways and Means Committee drawing with yarns from Coordinated Colors.

Cheryl Cauthen-Bond advised she has talked to the Hampton-Inn, Corolla Beach, N.C. re: a knitting retreat before the in-season price increase. The room rates, which include breakfast, are $126.65 to 143.65, double occupancy, per night. Further information to follow. In addition, Cheryl has mapped out a yarn crawl to Richmond, Virginia where we could visit 3 yarn stores. Again, further information to follow.

The next meeting will take place on Monday, March 7, 2011 at the Westminster-Canterbury. The program will be entrelac knitting. Please bring worsted weight yarn and a pair needles to use for practice in the program.

January 3, 2011 TKGV Meeting Minutes

The president of TKGV called the January 2011 meeting to order at 7:18 p.m. The president extended birthday wishes to the members celebrating January birthdays and wished all a Happy New Year. The minutes of the December 2010 meeting were approved. The treasurer’s report was received.

Committee reports were received with the following updates:
Charity Knitting:
a.Debbie Henderson reported 16 TKGV members donated 193 knitted items to various charities in 2010. The following donated the most number of charity items: Margaret Faust, Wanda Gunnoe, Mel Hutchinson and Lee Werbin. All four charity knitters will receive checks in the amount of $25.00 a piece for their generous charity knitting in 2010.
b.Pat Link, from Hats for the Homeless, gave the history of the Hats for the Homeless charity, which started 3 years ago by using yarn ends to knit hats for charities serving the homeless. Now Hats for the Homeless has 70 knitters and crocheters who produced 466 hats for the homeless in 2010. Pat uses various internet lists to secure donated yarn. She then gives the yarn to volunteers to knit and crochet hats. Pat picks up the completed hats and gives the hats to various local charities serving the homeless. Pat brought bags of yarn for TKGV knitters. We can contact Pat at patriciaalink@yahoo.com.
c.In addition, Debbie advised Save the Children needs hats for children by the February, 2011 meeting; the local animal shelters need blankets for cats and dogs; St. Mary’s needs clothing items knit in washable acrylic yarns; and the Veteran’s Administration needs hats, scarves and lap blankets. The Knitting Corner collects blankets for the Linus Project.
d.Debbie will host a TKGV charity knit-in on Saturday, 02/26/11 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at her residence. We will have a potluck lunch. Please contact Debbie Henderson via email at hendersonjb@cox.net to confirm attendance.
Ways & Means Committee – offered raffle items from Coordinated Colors.

On motion of Rae Streubing, and seconded, the guild approved giving $25.00 checks to the TKGV members who donate the highest number of knitted charity items in 2011.

The president reviewed the Heifer Fund program and suggested we continue collecting money at the monthly meetings for the Heifer Fund and make a donation once we collect sufficient funds to purchase the Heifer Fund knitting basket.

We will receive an update on the possible Richmond Yarn Crawl and a possible North Carolina knitting weekend once the planning is completed.

The president reminded all members we will meet at the Westminster-Canterbury, Penthouse suite, starting at the February, 2011 meeting. We will not order catering for the meetings. We will have to move a few meetings (July and September) because of conflicts in using the room on holidays. Please watch the newsletter and website for date changes for July and September, 2011.

The president advised, after a brief discussion of the need to continue carrying liability insurance, the board will review the topic and report back to the guild.

The president reported the Knitting Guild of America will hold its annual convention in Greensboro, N.C. 09/21/11 – 09/25/11.

On motion of Debbie Henderson, and seconded, the guild approved not planning a bus trip to the Maryland Sheep and Wool Festival in May, 2011.

The president advised the February, 2011 program will be a workshop on correcting knitting mistakes.

The president thanked Kathy Brown for setting up a Facebook page for TKGV.

After the member show and tell, Sue Von Ohlsen, master knitter, treated the members to a delightful program of “What’s In My Closet”. Sue exhibited several clothing items, as well a number of beautiful knitted lace items.

The next meeting will take place on Monday, February 7, 2011 at the Westminster- Canterbury.

The president of TKGV called the December 2010 meeting to order at 7:32 p.m. The president extended birthday wishes to the members celebrating December birthdays. The minutes of the November 2010 meeting were approved. The treasurer’s report was received.

Committee reports were received with the following updates:

1. Charity Knitting: Karen Richardson volunteered to take Jackie Scott’s position on the charity knitting team

2. Newsletter: Reminder to send your ideas to Sonja Barisic for the name the newsletter contest

3. Ways & Means Committee – offered raffle items from The Knitting Corner

4. Charity Knitting – awarded prizes, based on members’ votes for the Caps for Kids contest:

a. Best Technical Merit: Jackie Scott

b. Most Original: Lora Morin

c. Best in Show: Jackie Scott

d. Highest Number Contributed: Mel Hutchinson

The treasurer will forward $25.00 gift certificates to each of the winners of the Caps for Kids contest.

The president reviewed the Heifer Fund program and suggested we review a potential donation to the Heifer Fund at January, 2011 meeting.

The president advised the overwhelming majority of members who responded to the location preference poll preferred meeting at Westminster-Canterbury. The president will follow up with Westminster-Canterbury to confirm when we can start meeting at Westminster-Canterbury. The president will have further updates on the meeting location at the January, 2011 meeting.

The president opened the floor to suggestions for additional 2011 TKGV activities. Members suggested planning a Richmond, VA yarn shop crawl and an out of town knitting retreat, perhaps to the Outer Banks, N.C. Members will research the possibilities of these events.

We concluded the meeting with the member show and tell and the gift exchange. The meeting adjourned at 8:50 p.m.

The President called the November 2010 meeting to order at 7:18 p.m. The president welcomed the guests. The minutes of the October 2010 meeting were approved. The treasurer’s report was received.

Maureen Cahill, Chair of the Nominating Committee, installed the newly elected officers:

Kathy Brown, Treasurer
Katie Gerwien, Secretary.

Committee reports were received with the following updates:

1. letter from Ruby Roberts, out-of-state member

2. name the newsletter contest through January, 2011- submit ideas via email

3. request from President for volunteers for the New Member Committee

4. request from Vice President for volunteers to help plan the Sally Melville classes on 10/22 and 10/23/11.

The guild approved a motion to hold a voluntary Pollyanna gift exchange at the December meeting. All gifts will be wrapped, knitting related and the value is not to exceed $15.00.

The guild will provide beverages and paper products for the voluntary December pot luck party. The members with last names starting with A through L will bring appetizers. The members with last names starting with M through Z will bring desserts.

The guild was updated on the meeting location survey. Fifty members have answered the survey with 70% of the members favoring Westminster-Canterbury for the meeting location. The president will advise at the December meeting if we will change meeting locations.

The Maryland Sheep and Wool Festival will take place May 7 and May 8, 2011. Cornerstone Alpaca Farm is conducting a fiber arts celebration the weekend of November 6 and 7, 2010.

Sue Von Ohlsen, owner of The Knitting Corner, presented Trink Dahl-Prince with the beautiful afghan Trink won in the shop’s recent fundraiser, The Stitch To Win Against Breast Cancer. Trink advised she will give the beautiful afghan to a friend who is being treated for breast cancer.

We held the raffle, enjoyed the program by Lora Marin on “What’s in my closet?” and completed the member show and tell.

Old Business:

Lots of discussion about a meeting place. Whether to continue to meet at the current location or go back to Westminster Canturbury. Kathy, Lora, Trink made suggestions and will follow up next month. Maureen suggested using Survey Monkey to get ideas on where to hold the meeting.
Alison spoke to the Head of Catering at Westminster Canturbury. If the Guild wants to meet at WC, the guild needs 1) a resident sponsor (Chris Gerloff said she would be happy to be the sponsor starting in November) 2) a room available on the 1st Monday of the month with space for 25-50 people. The resident sponsor gets a form from Resident Services and fills in the form then works with the Catering Department for any catering services.
Cost for WC is $50-$75. In the current location, we pay $75 per month plus $325 liability per year. We have to set up the seats and there is no catering.
Other suggestions for a meeting place: Ray's Church or some members suggested a “bar”.
Maureen accepted the idea of using Survey Monkey and working with Kathy Brown. Members will be surveyed for free – up to 100 people can be anonymously surveyed for free.

Discussion about what to do with the Historical “stash” of paperwork going back to the beginning of the Tidewater Knitting Guild. Discussion about whether the materials can be thrown out or have to be stored and if they have to be stored, should the Guild get a small Storage Bin? Also, what do we want to keep among the memorabilia – scrapbooks, pictures, etc.
- Wanda will contact the National Guild to find out any legal or other requirements.
- Kathy Brown will contact the City of VB Archives to find out if there is any interest.
- Smithsonian may be interested in member ship lists and pictures of memebers of the Guild.
- Next month we'll review the options and come up with recommendations.

Old Business:

Any interest in going back to Westminster Canterbury? Some members have expressed an interest. The view is great and the chairs are all set up. Carolyn Cox volunteered to talk to one of the residents about sponsorship and get information about who to contact for details. Thank you Carolyn.
Knitting Needles were given to the Guild from Westminster Canterbury. Members were asked to think about what the Guild should do with the needles. Suggestions:

Cancer Support Groups – provide a diversion while undergoing treatment
Give to Knitting Teachers – to help children or parents as children learn to knit.
Tabled....Send to Romania or other countries in need – to help children or parents as children learn to knit. All ideas are good, except sending to a country like Romania requires money for postage and someone to find a good place to send them, so this idea was pushed to the back.
Pam will bring the needles next month and Carolyn is going to call the Girl Scouts and Karen will take some to the knitting teachers.

August Program: Charity Knitting

At first, St. Mary’s was a home for young children with no homes of their own or who needed a temporary place to stay while their mothers were at work at war plants. Over the years, the Home evolved into a home for children and young adults with severe disabilities, changing its name and moving into a new facility in the 1960s and then into its current, state-of-the-art building in 2005.

St Mary's is now a long term pediatric care facility located in Norfolk next to St Mary's Church. Up to 92 children live there, all in the range of severly mentally challenged. Many have physical challenges as well. There are 8 classrooms; 24 kids can go out to school from preschool to highschool.

Couple of events coming up:

Homeorama Showcase of New Homes – The Showcase is in East Beach, Norfolk this year. This Fall Homeorama has selected St Mary's for the first time. When the house is sold the proceeds will go to St Mary's.

5K Walk – Also at East Beach, in October. Some of the kids from St. Mary's will be in the Walk.

Funding: Largely funded by Medicaid. None of the parents have a cost associated with placing their children at St. Mary's. There is a gap between what is funded and what it costs to run the facility. This difference is received as grants or donations from individuals, corporations, and fund-raising appeals.

1. WWKIP – It was a GREAT day!! Thank you to the team who organized the event!

Everyone received a Knitting bag with lots of goodies inside. Knit Wits and The Knitting Corner were there as was Cornerstone Farm.

2. Any interest in going back to Westminster Canterbury? Some members have expressed an interest. The view is great and the chairs are all set up. Carolyn Cox volunteered to talk to one of the residents about sponsorship and get information about who to contact for details. Thank you Carolyn.

3. Cheryl Cauthen-Bond spent personal funds to buy the Knitting Bags and the Pins for WWKIP day. A motion was made to repay Cheryl for the purchased items which were given to each WWKIP participant. The motion was seconded and passed.

New Business:

Knitting Needles were given to the Guild from Westminster Canterbury. Members were asked to think about what the Guild should do with the needles. Suggestions:

Cancer Support Groups – provide a diversion while undergoing treatment
Give to Knitting Teachers – to help children or parents as children learn to knit.
Send to Romania or other countries in need – to help children or parents as children learn to knit

* Anyone with ideas for the Historical Knitting section of the newsletter or just some knitting history they would like researched, please call Karen and let her know. Karen enjoys doing the research and writing the articles.

President's Comments: Everyone was welcomed. We have five new people at the meeting tonight!! Three new members signed up, one member has returned and we have a visitor. Welcome!! June birthdays were recognized.

President's activities this past month: Not many activities in terms of “official” duties or junkets, but the President has done a lot of knitting this month.

* August – Charity Knitting-The Program will be more in depth information about St Mary’s. Many Guild members help to support St Mary's and create and donate wonderful knitted items to the folks at St Mary's. We will also discuss other Charity Projects and ideas.
* September - Yarn Sale Deux – We'll be back again with more from the stash!! Just in case you have a change of heart and want to dive deeper into your stash – or perhaps you have had a “Stash Intervention” …. now you can bring more to trade or sell!!

1. WWKIP – Yeah!! It's almost here. WWKIP is on Sunday July 13 at the D'Art Center in Norfolk. The WWKIP Ladies have done an OUTSTANDING job!! The Tidewater WW Knit in Public Day is promoted on Ravelry. It's on WAVY 10!! It's on the D'Art Center Website!! Trink sent information to all the local newspapers. Knitwits Newsletter mentioned it. Knitting Corner has it posted. The WWKIP Committee has made arrangement for door prizes, yummy yarns to taste and more!! A big shout out to membership – this is one event NOT to miss.

What next? Bring a chair, bring your own snacks and beverages. There is a Starbucks next door. Look up the Harborfest Parking suggestions. There are maps that show all the Parking lots. There is also a free shuttle that runs in the area. Car Pooling is a great idea.

New Business:

June Program: Recycled Yarn

Jean Mills and Trink Dahl-Prince led the program on all kinds of ways to save money and be “green” by recycling yarn found in Thrift Shops or in your closet. Look for wool sweaters with a stain, or sweaters that a child has outgrown. Don't throw the sweaters out or pass up that unwanted gift on the shelf in the Thrift Store... FROG it! Jean and Trink shared Internet Sites for information on recycling yarn, tips on what to look for, things to avoid, and how to unravel.

They also mentioned looking in the craft sections of Thrift shops for bags of yarn, books, needles, magazines, crochet hooks and other tools. Be wary of afghans as many of them are made of acrylic yarns!

President's Comments: Everyone was welcomed. We were thrilled to have another guest as a result of the Spring/Heritage Craft Show. May birthdays were recognized.

President'a activities this past month: Lots activity and details coordinating the 5/1 Maryland Sheep and Wool bus trip. A great time was had by all! And we made a profit of $385.00!! It was noted that next year we should find another place to meet and park cars as the Military Mall Security Patrol left notices on the parked cars.

    * Reminder for folks to register items knitted-the sign-in list is available at every meeting for people to register their count.
    * Yarns and other supplies were donated by Carolyn Dillingham. They are to be used for charity knitting. See Jackie Scott if interested.
    * As we move into summer, the Guild would like members to knit pet blankets for Charity projects. Any kind of blanket that can line a cage from cat size to Great Dane size. The pet blanket you make will go with the pet when it is adopted, so the blanket is part of the pet's care kit.

    * WW Knit in Public Day – This event will be held on June 13 from 12-5 at the D'ART Center in Norfolk. Bring a chair, food and drink. The WW Knit in Public coordinators envision lots of great activities to get everyone excited, including: a yarn tasting lounge, charity knitting, goody bags, a scavenger hunt and a learn-to-knit station. Members were asked to bring extra needles and scrap or old yarn to make kits. Volunteers will be needed to teach people to knit and to coordinate the charity knitting. During the June Meeting volunteers are needed to assist in the set up of yarn and needles in preparation for the “student” knitters! Plan is to set up 25-30 sets of yarn and needles.
New Business:
    * None tonight.

May Program: Eleanor and “team” demonstrated several Finishing Techniques. Eleanor showed several ways to “block” knitted items and brought some of her own lovely garments to demonstrate differing processes. Jackie Scott showed us ways to weave in those pesky loose ends. And Carolyn Cox demonstrated the always challenging Kitchener Stitch. Thank you to all of these ladies-this was an excellent program and enjoyed by all!!

President'a activities this past month: Lots of Frogging! And lots of hours worked to pull together the scheduling for the Spring Craft Show – and some great time logged working at the Craft Show as well.

Speakers – Sally Melville is available for 2011. We could have Sally for a weekend in November 2011 – either weekend of 5/6 or 12/13 2011. For 4 classes, the cost is approximately $1600 plus incidental expenses. We also need to rent a place to hold the classes. A suggestion was to get a quote from Westminster Canterbury. Everyone was very interested in pursuing more information about class size limitations and to get more details on the dates and location.

A sign-in list is available at every meeting for people to register their count.
The Guild received a nice thank you note from St Mary's for slippers and a blanket. The Guild is supporting St Mary's as our charity at this point in time. Please consider knitting anything that a child from age 4 up to young adult age might want, which can go into a hot washer and dryer. Slipper socks and lap blankets are always appreciated.
As we move into summer, the Guild would like members to knit pet blankets for Charity projects. Any kind of blanket that can line a cage from cat size to Great Dane size. The pet blanket you make will go with the pet when it is adopted, so the blanket is part of the pet's care kit.
Charity yarn and needles were donated to the Guild. Members were asked to take any items tonight, on the honor system, for use in Charity Knitting projects.

Web Committee strongly believes the TKGV Blog should be linked via Google for “click-thru” advertising as a way to make money for the Guild. One suggestion for use of the money is to fund a website.
Much discussion ensued. A suggestion was made that it would be helpful if the Web committee would provide more information about Google Click-thru and what is involved in developing, funding and maintaining a website. It would then be helpful to document the process with “big animal pictures” to present the process to the membership at a future meeting.
Carolyn Cox volunteered to look at the terms and conditions of the Google Click-thru.
Treasurer agreed to look into “non-profit” status and what affect, if any, advertising dollars have on the Guild's “non-profit” status.

Old Business:

MD Sheep and Wool – Last month membership decided the Guild would pay $100 plus the $100 deposit. At this time there are 23 people confirmed and 2 “maybes”. There are 9 non-members.
Spring Craft Show – The show was a huge success. The Guild drew a lot of interest in both the knitted items on display and questions about knitting and the Guild. As noted above under Programs, 2 guests present at the April meeting were “recruits” from the show.
WW Knit in Public Day – This event will be held on June 13 from 12-5 at the D'ART Center in Norfolk. Bring a chair, food and drink. The WW Knit in Public coordinators envision lots of great activities to get everyone excited, including: a yarn tasting lounge, charity knitting, goody bags, a scavenger hunt and a learn-to-knit station. New Business:

Raffle Committee made a request to increase funding for Raffle prizes to $150 per quarter. The Raffle Committee spent $99 allocated for the 1st quarter. A Motion was made, seconded, there was a discussion, a vote was held and the Motion carried.
The President received an email from Blue Heron Yarns, with an offer to bring Blue Heron discontinued yarns to a Guild meeting for show and purchase. Members are pretty excited about having Blue Heron, so Members asked Trink to schedule Blue Heron as part of Programming.

April Program: Sue Von Ohlsen presented the April Program on “Better Shoulder Shaping”.

Instead of the “stair step” appearance which is unattractive and hard to seam together, Sue had an example of a technique used by Elizabeth Zimmerman. The technique utilizes P2Tog and K2Tog as the first and last stitch in the bind-offs typically used to create the shoulder slope. The P2Tog and K2Tog create a more gradual slope, which is easier to seam. Sue also reminded members that shoulder shaping is not always necessary, especially if the wearer of the sweater has square shoulders. It's important to remember patterns are not written in stone and if the knitter knows a better way to do something, the knitter should make the modification.

MDS&W – We currently have 7 people signed up; 3 members and 4 non-members. Passionate discussion about pros and cons on use of approx 1/3 the Guild's money to pay for the bus which currently has 3 members signed up. Linda suggested to agree on an amount the guild would be willing to pay. Another suggestion made to move the cutoff day for committing to the bus to April 10. A Motion was made for the Guild to put in up to $100 in addition to the $100 deposit in order to fund the Bus for a total Guild committment of $200. If there is not enough membership or other riders to fund the bus with the addition of the $200 from the Guild, the bus will be canceled. Motion passed.

New Business:

Craft Show March 19, 20, 21 – we need a few more volunteers to sign up. We have 2 people signed up for many slots, but we really need 3 people in each time slot. We have some empty slots, so members were encouraged to please take a look at their calendars and sign-up for a slot. Free entrance to the Craft Show as a benefit. Located at the Virginia Beach Convention Center.
Knit out and Crochet Event (Craft Yarn Council of America) coming up. Need volunteers – will ask again next month after people have had a chance to think about it.

March Program: Cables.

Caroloyn Cox led an informative program on Cables as a last minute substitution for Katie Gerwien who was recovering from a cold. (We hope you feel better Katie!) Carolyn jumped in to present front crossed, back crossed, cables in the middle of garments, popping out cables, books on cables and Answers to Questions on Cables. Even how to make the cable so it's completely reversible – looks good on the front and the back. Lots of creative ideas on what you can use if you lose your cable needle? Toothpicks, paper clips, or chopsticks were all recommended. Thank you Carolyn!

Raffle:

10 prizes were won and enjoyed by members – we had a lot of prizes because we missed the February meeting.

Show and Tell: Members showed many knitted garments and works in progress. One of the guests showed a finished free pattern shawl from Ravelry, called “Traveling Woman” made with “String Theory” yarn which got RAVE reviews. Thank you!!

President's Comments: Everyone was welcomed. Glad to see everyone came out in the cold and hope there is lots of yarn to sell. One new member was welcomed - Julia Poussiant – Julia was a guest last month and joined. Birthday wishes were made to all January birthdays.

Minutes of prior month posted on the TKGV website for members to read. Copies were also available at the meeting. Minutes were accepted as presented.

Heiffer Fund Update by Lisa Roberts: The TKGV sent a Knitting Basket. All remaining funds were added to the new Heiffer Fund for 2010.

o Class on Recycling yarn – Jean Mills and Trink Dahl-Prince will lead in February

Charity Projects: Jackie Scott.
o In 2009 the TKGV members created and donated a total of 176 items. Members may not be reporting all charity knitting as this number is down from prior years.
o For 2010, Members were asked if the Guild wants to continue to fund a prize.
o Motion: Jackie Scott made a motion to fund Prize budget of $100 for 3 prizes - Grand Prize $50 for the most prolific knitter and $25 each for the second and third place knitters in terms of points.
o Motion Seconded by Lisa Roberts and Motion passed by membership.
o Award counting is done on a point system. Jackie will report in February on the point system and Sonia will publish the point system in the newsletter.
o Charity Knit-In – Member get-together to spend a day creating knitted items for charity.
o Carolyn Cox will host sometime in February – the date will be announced in the Newsletter and at the February meeting.
o Other Charity ideas for 2010: Last year TKGV supported Caps for Kids, Pet Blankets, St Mary's and the Military with Helmet Liners.
o Members discussed and agreed to continue with St Mary's, Caps for Kids, Samaritan House, Volunteers of America (VOA) or NEST (Homeless).
o Suggestion to do VOA in Winter (Jan to April) St Mary's over summer (May to Sept) and Caps for Kids in the Fall.
o Homeless need caps, mittens, scarves, warm things.
o St Mary's can use lap blankets, socks, caps, scarves.
o Pet Blankets, Helmet Liners and scarves for Military needed all year.
o Citizen Sam has patterns, colors, sizes, etc for Military knitting
o Charity Log Sheet – Debbie Henderson will continue to log items.

Welfare and Calling Tree: Volunteers needed to organize a calling tree.
o Pam St Clair asked for a member to volunteer to lead a Welfare and Calling Tree.

Community Events: Linda Johnson. No Updates

Newsletter and Publicity: Sonia Barisic needs any information for the newsletter by the 15th of the month in order for the information to be included in the newsletter.
o Sonia would like road or trip reports, book reports.
o Currently “Snail” Mailing Newsletters to 24 people. An updated membership list will be available for February which may shorten the list of people who need to receive a copy via posted mail.

Ways and Means: Angie, Eleanor Cavin and Cheryl Cauthen-Bond.
o Tote bags available for $20.

New Membership Committee: Anji Harris agreed to lead the New Membership Committee.

MD Sheep and Wool:
o Price for a seat on the bus is $45 until April. After April 1, the price goes up to $55. Members interested in going to MD Sheep and Wool with TKGV asked to fill in the forms available at the meeting and send in the money in order to confirm the reservation.

Minutes of the November meeting posted to the Main Page of the Website. Minutes will continue to be posted to the Main Page until there is a Members Only area. Several additional printed copies were on hand for members who do not have access to the Website. Minutes of the November meeting accepted as presented.

Committee Reports:

- Programs - Trink Dahl Prince. January Program is the Annual Yarn Sale. Suggestions for following months: How to use recycled yarn, speakers such as Clara Parkes, Natalie Wilson, Wendy Johnson or guest from a local Alpaca Farm, a “knit-in” or retreat in Sandbridge. Trink will contact each of the suggested speakers to find out next steps to schedule and cost.

- Charity Projects - Jackie Scott. Jackie displayed a large selection of Hats for “Caps for Kids”. Hats were on hand for voting in several categories. Members were asked to cast their votes and the winners were announced later during the Main Program.

- Charity Log Sheet – Debbie Henderson will continue to log items.

- Welfare and Calling Tree – Membership asked for volunteers to organize a calling tree.

- Community Events - Linda Johnson. Linda will continue to research and help to organize event schedules, but may not be able to do all the events. Suggestion made to list the events with the Pilot Online Calendar.

- Newsletter and Publicity - Sonja Barisic volunteered to list the events with Pilot Online and in the Newsletters. Sonja asked members to send items for inclusion in the newsletter such as patterns or Road Trip “Yarn Reports” from members who visit a yarn shop while traveling.

- Ways and Means – Angie Harris, Elenor Cavin and Cheryl Cauthen-Bond. Treasurer will provide a check for Ways and Means at December meeting.

- New Membership Committee - New Membership Committee needed. Membership asked for volunteers.

- Website Committee - Joanne Fisher, Lara Marin and Andrea Riddle. Joanne added to the Ravelry TKGV Group seeking suggestions for TKGV Website. Next steps are to collect requirements and hold a meeting to determine how to fulfill the requirements.

Old Business:

- Heffer Fund - $59 was needed to get the Heffer fund to goal of $500 for a “Knitting Basket”. Members asked to consider this shortfall as the donation bucket was passed.

- Knitting Corner Afghan Project for the Susan G Korman Foundation: Outstanding response from membership - enough squares were knit to make 3 Afghans and approx $3500 was raised.

- MD Sheep and Wool – May 1 & 2, 2010. Cost for 42 Seat Hound Dog Bus: $1500
Motion raised to go to Maryland Sheep and Wool by Lisa Roberts and seconded by Dona Poole. Motion passed.

New Business:

- Members only section on Website: General agreement by membership that a Members Only section is needed on the Website to post items like the Meeting Minutes and the Newsletter. This requirement will be added to the agenda for the Web Committee.

- New Programs: Members were asked to contact Trink for suggestions on additional program ideas.

- Charity Projects: Dona Poole and Lisa Roberts volunteered to co-Chair Charity projects. Dona and Lisa appealed to membership to provide suggestions for TKGV Group Projects for 2010. Dona and Lisa will take suggestions at the January meeting. Many thanks to Jackie Scott for her contributions as outgoing Chair of the Charity Projects Committee.

- Debbie Henderson made an appeal for Helmet Liners. Helmet Liners are always needed and much appreciated by Men and Women in the Service going to Afghanistan.

- WW Knit in Public Day June 12 and 13, 2010: Cheryl Cauthen-Bond suggested the D'Art Center in Norfolk. Carolyn Cox offered to help. Cheryl and Carolyn will get the specifics about utilizing the D'Art center for WWKIP and report at the January meeting.

- TKGV Group KAL: Lisa Roberts suggested the Guild should do a group Knit-A-Long

- Raffle: 3 Items were raffled.

Program:

- Polyanna Gift Exchange. Members who participated called randomly by numbers on Raffle tickets to choose and enjoy their Gift.

- Member Show and tell. While voting for Caps for Kids and opening Gifts, members also presented their knitted items and works in process for Show and Tell.

Minutes of October meeting read by Norma Haynes. One correction was made. We did not elect Susan Johnson to the Newsletter Committee. Report was amended as presented.

The slate of new officers were sworn in by Carolyn Cox: Pam St Clair – President, Trink Dahl-Prince – Vice President, Lisa Roberts – Treasurer, Peggie Meyer – Secretary.

Committee Reports:
- Charity Projects: Jackie Scott is going to continue to chair Charity through 12/31/09. Sandra Thrul is going to chair the Charity Projects committee starting January 2010.

New Business:
- Heffer Fund: Currently there is not enough to make the donation we have made in the past. We are $105 short. Members were asked to please consider this amount during this meeting and hopefully we will be able to reach the goal by December meeting.

- Name Tags: Members are encouraged to get dues paid by December meeting. The Board voted to raise the fine for not wearing a Name Tag to $1. The fine increase will go into effect in January 2010 and any funds collected will go toward Ways and Means for yarn raffle purchases.

- December Pot Luck: Membership agreed to have a December Pot Luck. A sign up sheet provided at the close of November meeting for members to sign up. Membership asked that the Guild provide the paper products. Agreed.

- Holiday Gift Exchange: Voluntary participation. Members who wish to participate to provide a knitting related gift. Members raised the gift maximum from $15 to $20.

Raffle: No raffle at November meeting. Will have a raffle at December meeting.

Mission of Guild: Education of members, helping new knitters, recruitment of new knitters. Discussion about changing the format of the meeting to allow for a longer Program with Q&A, move the Member Show and Tell and compress time spent on other areas of the meeting.

Motion was made to start the Meeting start at 7:15, and seconded. New format of the meeting will be Business , 30 Minute Program Q&A and Additional Resources, Raffle, Show and Tell. New format to start at the January meeting.

Raffle: Board voted to fund the Ways and Means $99 per quarter to purchase raffle items. In addition, as noted above, any Name Tag Fines will go to the Ways and Means Committee.

Recruitment: Members were asked to think about ideas to bring in new knitters. At the December meeting, Pam will bring in a sheet to have members indicate their ideas. The Guild also has cards that local knitting stores and other establishments can use put to provide TKGV contact and meeting information to interested parties.

Westminster Canterbury Committee: The Committee has been disbanded since the Guild no longer meets at WC.

Maryland Sheep and Wool: Decision needs to be made next month about making a deposit for May 2010. Members talked about other local Guilds who may want to also participate and were asked to think about their interest in participating next May.

Other Local Guilds: Board will explore other Guilds interest in joining forces not only for Maryland Sheep and Wool but also to help fund National Knitting teachers. All the other Guilds also welcome visitors, so a list of other Virginia Guilds was provided in case any TKGV Guild members are traveling and might be available during their meeting times.

Newsletter: Starting in January the Newsletter will be posted on-line. Anyone who does not have an email will continue to get a newsletter in the mail.

Website: Membership desires to make the TKGV website more user-friendly and also assist in the Mission of the Guild to get additional exposure to knitting education and resources. Suggestion to have links to Yarn Companies and ask for sponsorship. A Web Committee was suggested: Joanne Fisher, Andrea Riddle and Lara Marin will start the Committee.

Minutes: Meeting minutes will be posted to the website. Members are encouraged to read the notes on-line. Some copies will be printed for members to look at prior to the beginning of the next meeting. Members will read and approve or amend.

Annual Yarn Sale: People who are not members of the Guild are welcome to participate, but will pay an entrance fee of $25 for use of Guild resources.

Program: Nalebinding or Knotless Netting or Knotless Knitting.

Member Show and tell.

The guild met at Carrollyn's home on Saturday, 2/28/09 to enjoy a day of fellowship, knitting and a delicious homemade lunch. We worked on lap robes and slippers for St. Mary's Infants Home and dog blankets for local animal shelters.

The guild thanks Carrollyn for her gracious hospitality and her delicious homemade soups!

Melissa Leapman Classes - February 7 & 8, 2009

Melissa Leapman, a widely-published knitting and crochet designer, taught 4 classes to the Tidewwater Knitting Guild of Virginia February 7 and 8, 2009. Melissa led classes on basic pattern design, fully fashioned pattern techniques, basic cables and Celtic cables. Everyone enjoyed her teaching style, the knowledge she imparted and the opportunity to see some of her knitting design work.

1:00 – 4:00pm. – Clara Parkes led the TKGV and guests on a behind-the-skeins tour of our yarn world. Using the fundamental yarn facts presented in her book, The Knitter’s Book of Yarn, we walked through the flora and fauna of yarn—from the ways fibers get prepared for spinning all the way to how they are spun and the different ply scenarios you may encounter. She shared tips for “reading” skeins on the shelf, testing your swatches at home, and troubleshooting common problems.

All Day Events:
10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Sit and Knit/Crochet – bring your projects and knit and crochet with fellow enthusiasts

Local Yarn Store Displays – local yarn shops will display the newest in yarns, needles, hooks and patterns

Fix-it Clinic – have a question about your knitting or crochet project? Stop by and ask one of our on-site experts

Learn to Knit/Crochet - we'll help you learn the basics

Breast Cancer Awareness – join us to knit scarves to donate to Breast Cancer Survivors.

Charity Knitting Drop-off – bring knitted or crocheted items for charity and receive a chance to win a yarn related gift

Drawings – sign up for a chance to win a yarn related gift drawn each half hour; must be present to win

Demonstrations – Knitting, Crocheting, Spinning

Competitions – Submit a Hat from a pattern or design an original Hat or Scarf (see rules below)

1 Division: HAT PATTERN - Knit or crochet a hat for infant, child or adult from a pattern.

Edie Eckman will be teaching 4 classes in September for the Guild.

Saturday September 22
Pattern Writing 101 9:00 – 12:00
If you have a design you’d like to get published, or even if you just want to
share your design with other knitters, you need to be able to write it so others
can read it. Learn how to take your idea from concept to written pattern,
avoiding typical mistakes along the way. Explore the joys and pitfalls of
grading patterns for a number of different sizes, and pick up tips for getting
your designs accepted for publication.

Dramatic Dropped Stitches 1:30 – 4:30
Dropped stitches can be a Good Thing. Intentionally dropped stitches can
create a light and lacy fabric with very little effort. Learn an assortment of
dropped stitches and see how they can be used to lighten up your knitting.
Students should have some experience working stitch patterns. No
homework required.

Sunday September 23
Math for Knitters 9:00 – 12:00
This class will take the mystery out of those pesky math calculations you
have to do when designing or altering a sweater. Math-phobics are welcome,
and you don't have to raise your hand in class. We will draft a basic sweater
and discuss calculating yarn amounts, V-neck shaping, rates of
increase/decrease and stitch pattern placement. No homework.

Learn to Knit Cables 1:30 – 4:30
Don't let cables get you in a twist! No matter how complex the cable, the
essential principles are the same. Learn the basics of cable formation and
behavior, and see how small changes make for different looks. Become
comfortable with both text and charted instructions, and pick up tips on
keeping track of your place in the pattern. Knitters should be confident with
knitting and purling. No homework required, but you will need to bring
materials to class.

Details:
· Each class is 3 hours
· Materials will be at students’ expense, unless otherwise noted
· Lunch will be on your own
· You may sign up for 1 or for all classes

Classes are $25 each for members in good standing, $35 each for
non-members. Members have priority in enrollment.

Even with a warm beginning (air conditioner wasn't working) we had a GREAT response from the public and a few Guild members with our afternoon of fiber arts.

Don't forget:

The Tidewater Knitting Guild of Virginia will offer a "round robin" of "Introduction to" classes on Saturday, July 7th at the Central Library of Virginia Beach, 4100 Virginia Beach Blvd, Virginia Beach on Saturday, from 1:00 - 5:00pm. "Knitting on a Loom", "Needle Felting", "Intro to Knitting" will be offered. Cost: $10 per person. For additional information email TKGV@cox.net.

Non-members are welcome! and we'll have a few surprise "classes" going on as well!

Thanks to a comment made by Joanne, it hit me I had forgotten to add the World Wide Knit in Public Day (June 6, 2007) pictures!

Joanne knit while working for the Chesapeake Humane Society Adoption Day. She made sure each of the pups and kitties went home with a blanket knit by a TKGV member.

And take a look at Molly. That's one pup that knows how nice a knitted blanket can be!

For anyone wanting to participate in a fiber related project in memory of a Va Tech victim and/or victims families, here are some links.

Project Hokie Hope A VaTech alumni is gathering squares to make a blanket for the victims families.

In Memory of Mary Read a student who was killed. One of the memories her family shared was of her knitting her grandmother a "fuzzy" scarf for Christmas. This is a knit-a-long.

Knitting for Virginia Tech Students to knit an item for the students of Va Tech.

....... this Saturday at The Frances Land House - Gathering of the Guilds. We'll have our tote bags, cookbooks, a bit of yarn and a few small knitted items for sale, all to benefit our Guilds education fund.

It's also a great family day! Blacksmiths, smockers, spinners, hand carvers, weavers, quilters, and many more Guilds will be available to share their craft.

It's not too late to join us for our next class on Saturday, February 24th. Martha will be showing us how to knit a cute little hooded sweater that, with a little math and swatching, can be made to fit any size human!

I'm really excited about this class. I do enjoy learning from someone who has been knitting since 4, can knit a childs sock in about 3 hours without a pattern and using differnt size double point needles, dyes yarn and designs some teriffic shawls and wraps. email me at tkgv@cox.net if you're interested.......Linda

March 25th – Francis Land House, 10 am to 4 pm – This is a fun, family day – all of the guilds are there demonstrating their craft.

April meeting, Monday the 3rd – Needle Felting

May meeting, Monday the 1st – tbd

May 6th – Maryland Sheep and Wool Festival. A bus has been reserved. The cost for members is $35, non-member $40. Seats are still available.

May 12–14, Spring Craft Show, Virginia Beach Pavilion – This is one of the largest craft shows in our area. All the guilds are invited to set up tables and demonstrate. We will need volunteers here to help, as well.

June 24th – Yarn Store Hop – We’re going to visit ALL the yarn stores in the area in a car-a-van. We’ll pick a place to meet and then go shopping. We’ll probably stop for lunch along the way.
